Marine Mammal Distribution and Abundance Determination

The U.S. Navy is working to improve our understanding of the behavior, seasonal distribution, and abundance of marine species in areas where the Navy conducts testing and training activities. Such findings are expected to provide a biological baseline to be used when assessing potential effects of Navy training activities on marine mammals. Research projects in this focus area aim at improving the sensing and data collection capabilities of the Navy through applications of new tagging and acoustic monitoring technologies, as well as pioneering methods for turning at-sea observations into better measures of animal abundance, density, distribution and habitat use.
