Biomass and Methane Fuel

A biomass (trash to energy) plant at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Va. produces electricity and steam from municipal waste, and contributes 1.4% of the Department’s total renewable generation.

Alternative methane fuels commonly come from the decomposition of buried contents at a landfill, or from wastewater treatment plants. At Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany, Ga., a project is underway that will provide  an additional  1.9 megawatts of renewable electric power to the base, producing enough renewable energy to power the equivalent of 1,200 homes, and removing emissions equal to about 16,000 vehicles. The plant will run on landfill gas from the nearby Dougherty County landfill.
