USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6)

Large Ship Category

The USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) won the FY 2015 SECNAV Energy Award in the Large Hull category. LHD 6 received the award in recognition of its judicious power consumption; USS Bonhomme Richard is the only forward-deployed amphibious flagship. The ship underburned during all four quarters of its 2015 underway deployment supporting Marines of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit. Energy savings were accomplished by leveraging technology, innovation and behavior change.

Engineering Officers of the Watch constantly monitored energy conservation, and the navigator used Optimum Ship Track Route (OSTR) and Tactical Environmental Support System (TESS) data to plan optimal routes. Securing unnecessary electrical equipment while in port, prioritizing good maintenance practices, and minimizing air conditioning plant demand also contributed to the energy savings.

Awareness and training initiatives were also critical to achieving greater efficiency, with energy efficiency presentations shown regularly on site, and energy awareness notes and best practices published in the Plan of the Day.
