Strike Fighter Squadron One Three One

VFA 131 won the FY 2015 SECNAV Energy Award in the Commander, Naval Air Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet Category. VFA 131 received the award in recognition of its innovative efforts to minimize fuel consumption, and for providing training to aircrew and ground crew on fuel-saving procedures.

Upon determining that their F/A-18Cs have redundant systems and do not require both engines to be operating to safely conduct certain ground operations, the winning squadron developed and implemented post-landing operations, hot refueling, and crew switch procedures that use only one engine.

By using these techniques, the squadron redirected nearly 33,000 pounds (4,800 gallons) of fuel from ground operations to combat readiness training in a single quarter.
